Sam Elliott’s Daughter Wishes Him a Happy 82nd Birthday and Reveals Hobby They ‘Love’ to Do Together

The actor’s only daughter, Cleo Rose Elliott, shared tributes to him on Instagram to celebrate his birthday

Sam Elliott’s daughter is helping him usher in a new year.

The actor turned 82 on Sunday, Aug. 9, and his daughter, Cleo Rose Elliott, whom he shares with wife Katharine Ross, celebrated the birthday in two Instagram posts.

In the first, shared on Aug. 9, Cleo posted a black-and-white portrait of her dad with three dogs in his lap. “Happy birthday Dad! I love you,” she wrote in the caption.

The next day, she shared a photo with Sam from a beach trip in Malibu. “My dad and I have a great love for collecting rocks, especially agates!” Cleo, 41, wrote of the shared hobby.

In the photo, taken at sunset, Sam and Cleo stare at a rock he’s holding. “What’s your favorite type of stone?” she asked her followers in the caption.

Sam and Ross, 86, welcomed Cleo, their only child, in September 1984, just four months after they tied the knot.

The couple first met on the set of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, but things didn’t turn romantic between them until they reunited in 1978’s The Legacy. Ross split from her then-husband, Gaetano Lisi, shortly afterward.

Sam has said that being a dad “completes” him. “It’s great to have a nice career. It’s what I wanted to do since I was 8 years old, and I’m fulfilled on that level,” he told Parade in 2017. “But being a dad? That’s even more fulfilling. I have one daughter, who I love more than anyone in the world.”

“I just really love being with Cleo. It doesn’t really matter what we’re doing,” he told the outlet.

As she did in her birthday tribute, the Landman star noted their shared passion for finding rocks on the beach. “We’re rock hounds,” Sam said.

“My dad was a rock hound, I’m a rock hound, my daughter is now a rock hound. We pick up all these beautiful stones,” he said.
