Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will not be joining the royal family at Sandringham for Christmas this year, according to an insider.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have no intentions of participating in King Charles' traditional Christmas celebrations alongside Harry's brother Prince William and other royal family members, a source has claimed.

This development follows ongoing tensions between the Sussexes and Harry's relatives since the couple's return to the UK earlier this year.

"There is a hierarchy," a palace insider told Page Six. "And the King is the CEO, he's the boss - what he says go, so it's better not to put themselves in any difficult position."

The insider suggests that the couple is alternatively contemplating spending the holidays at their current cottage in Northamptonshire - or heading back to California.

Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, is anticipated to join them wherever they choose to celebrate the holiday with Archie and Lillibet.

The Duke of Sussex made a discreet appearance at Welford Road to watch Leicester Tigers face Gloucester, being an avid rugby enthusiast.

He was, however, met with boos by some spectators after appearing on the big screen - enjoying a beer. The couple has maintained a relatively low profile since returning to the UK, though they were seen together during a low-key visit to a local pub.

Meghan was also seen at a pub alongside fellow American celebrity Ellen DeGeneres and her partner Portia de Rossi.

They relocated back to the UK in August, bringing along their two children - Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

After their return, a letter was distributed on behalf of the monarch reminding officials that the couple cannot use their HRH titles and that they do not represent the royal family.

Harry and Meghan said that the statement caught them by "surprise" and in response said that they would prefer to be recognized as "public figures" rather than "private citizens" as the King classified them.

Prince Harry's representatives have been contacted for comment.
