Matthew McConaughey says he’s still talking to Taylor Sheridan about a Yellowstone spinoff.
Rumors first started as Sheridan was engaged in a standoff with Yellowstone star Kevin Costner.
Sheridan previously called McConaughey a “natural fit.”
Matthew McConaughey says that his rumored Yellowstone spinoff is still alive, alive, alive.
Years after news broke that McConaughey was in talks to star in a new series from Taylor Sheridan that would exist in his hit universe, the Oscar winner revealed that the project isn’t quite dead yet.
“It’s not any more of a thing than it was or probably any less of a thing than it was that did hit the headlines there for a while,” McConaughey told The Playlist. “Taylor and I have spoken and have continued to have conversations about what [it could be] and if that would be whatever. But nothing’s real yet.”

Back in 2023, as Sheridan was in a standoff with Yellowstone star Kevin Costner over his future on the show, reports emerged that Paramount and Sheridan were planning on ending the mothership and starting an extension of the franchise with McConaughey.
“He seems like a natural fit,” Sheridan said at the time. “We had a few conversations over the years, and spitballed a few ideas. Then he started watching Yellowstone and responded to it. He was like, ‘I want to do that.’ And by ‘that’ he meant diving into a raw world clashing up against the modern world. And then I said, ‘Buddy, that we can do.’”

Sheridan and McConaughey do appear to be a match made in heaven, between their dedication to their current home state of Texas and the fact that McConaughey just feels like someone who belongs on a horse, delivering Sheridan dialogue.
But a lot has changed in the Yellowstone-verse since word first came of McConaughey’s possible involvement. Sheridan wrapped Yellowstone in 2024, after proceeding without Costner for the final six episodes, killing off his lead character, John Dutton. Two sequel series, Dutton Ranch and Marshals, launched earlier this year, following the new adventures of a pair of Dutton’s kids. Also recently debuting was Sheridan’s Michelle Pfeiffer-fronted The Madison, which many believed was going to be the McConaughey Yellowstone spinoff, before it pivoted it to being unrelated to the original show.
McConaughey is set to soon return to live-action television, reuniting with his True Detective partner Woody Harrelson on the upcoming Apple TV comedy Brothers, in which they play fictionalized versions of themselves.
