"I don't know how to not be that girl, but I will say I posted a snippet of one of my new songs that's coming out very, very soon and somebody was like, 'The '90s are back,' " she recalls. "And I was like, 'Okay.' I like to let the people decide what the sound is."

While people may have different interpretations of the sound, Lizzo says that it all comes down to her loving to write "really good music."

'This song is dedicated to the women who get called a bitch for having boundaries, for being sexual, for speaking up for themselves, for working hard and owning businesses…" wrote Lizzo next to a clip from the music video on Instagram.

"If we don't smile and perform all the time we're 'ungrateful,' " she continued. " 'If we run a strict program we're 'mean.' If we enjoy sex we're 'sluts' and shamed. This WOMANIFESTO is a declaration of independence from the bullsh*t. It's a B!TCH summer."

In a statement shared with PEOPLE after announcing her new album, Lizzo said that "reclaiming the word Bitch is power."

"It's taking a label once used to diminish women and turning it into a declaration of confidence, and unapologetic self-love," the statement continued.

Lizzo spoke further about reclaiming the word's meaning while speaking about her album title with PEOPLE.

"It's called 𝖑̢𝖨̢𝖳̢𝖒̢𝖧̢, but there's a line going through it because I'm not the names that you call me," she says. "It's about empowering yourself and loving yourself through your flaws. Life is a journey, and thank God I get to make music about it."
