Wherever she goes, Kate Middleton is guaranteed to grab attention thanks to her sense of style.

The Princess of Wales, 44, is known for her elegant fashion sense and chooses timeless outfits whenever she carries out a royal engagement. Indeed, Kate recently wore a classic red and white polka dot dress, which she paired with a matching red clutch bag as she joined King Charles at a special cancer event.

Kate, Charles and Queen Camilla attended a special event to mark 125 years of Cancer Research UK earlier this month. Kate stole the spotlight with her outfit at the event, with many fans pointing out the similarities to one previously worn by her mother-in-law, the late Princess Diana.

Diana was seen wearing red and white dresses on a number of occasions, including in April 1983 when she attended the opening of Bourke Street Mall in Melbourne, Australia.

Nick Ede, brand and culture expert, suggested Kate's nod to Diana was done on purpose. Speaking exclusively to The Express US on behalf of Cafe Casino, he shared, "The similarities between Catherine's dress and one famously worn by Princess Diana are unlikely to be accidental."

The expert explained, "The Princess of Wales is incredibly aware of the power of fashion as a communication tool, and subtle nods to Diana often resonate strongly with the public. By referencing a much-loved look from her late mother-in-law, she reinforces a sense of continuity, warmth and connection to one of the most beloved figures in modern royal history."

Nick also said Kate's dress "projects optimism, confidence and approachability." He suggested, "At an event focused on cancer research, it struck the perfect balance between respect, positivity and relatability."

Kate's fashion is a notable change from that of other royal family members, with the mom-of-three often seen wearing more modern pieces of clothing.

Nick told us, "I do think Catherine's choice reflects the gradual evolution of the royal family under the influence of William and Catherine.

"We're seeing a move away from formality for formality's sake and towards a more relatable, modern style of leadership. The Princess understands that today's public wants authenticity and connection, and her wardrobe increasingly reflects that."

Despite Kate's preference for a more modern wardrobe, the culture expert insisted, "Royal glamour is definitely not disappearing. There will always be occasions for fabulous gowns and crowns and grand coats, hats and regal tailoring."

Nick concluded, "Looking ahead to a future reign under William, I expect we'll continue to see a monarchy that feels less distant and fashion is one of the clearest ways Catherine communicates that shift."

The Cancer Research UK event was close to Kate's heart as she was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer early in 2024, for which she underwent chemotherapy. She revealed she was in remission in January 2025.
