The Bonnie and Clyde actress remains best known for her groundbreaking work during the late 1960s and 1970s, a period in which she became one of Hollywood's most celebrated and recognizable stars. She first rose to prominence with her role as outlaw Bonnie Parker, starring opposite Warren Beatty. The film was both a critical and cultural phenomenon, and earned Dunaway her first Academy Award nomination.

For Network, released in 1976, Dunaway won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of ambitious television executive Diana Christensen. Over the course of her career, she earned multiple Oscar nominations and built a résumé that includes standout performances in films such as Chinatown and The Thomas Crown Affair.
In 1981, Dunaway starred in the controversial biographical drama Mommie Dearest as actress Joan Crawford, opening up to PEOPLE about the backlash that followed the release of the movie.
“I think it turned my career in a direction where people would irretrievably have the wrong impression of me — and that's an awful hard thing to beat. I should have known better, but sometimes you're vulnerable and you don't realize what you're getting into," Dunaway said in a 2016 interview with PEOPLE.
Despite her enduring legacy, Dunaway has been associated in more recent years with one of the most memorable moments in Academy Awards history. At the 89th Academy Awards in 2017, she and Beatty mistakenly announced La La Land as Best Picture after being handed the wrong envelope. The award actually belonged to Moonlight, leading to an unprecedented onstage correction that quickly became a notorious Oscars moment.
The actress shared son Liam with her second husband, photographer Terry O'Neill, whom she divorced in 1987. Her first husband was J. Geils Band singer Peter Wolf, to whom she was married from 1974 to 1979.
