Barry Keoghan reflected on the challenges he experienced amid rumors he cheated on Sabrina Carpenter

As a result of the online hate he received at the time, Keoghan "disappeared" from the public eye

Barry Keoghan is reflecting on difficulties he faced amid rumors that he cheated on Sabrina Carpenter.

The Saltburn actor, 33, appeared on Benny Blanco's Friends Keep Secrets podcast for its April 28 episode and opened up about how the claims of infidelity impacted his day-to-day life. Keoghan and Carpenter dated for about a year before splitting in December 2024, around the time the actor faced allegations that he cheated on the singer with influencer Breckie Hill.

Following the claims, Keoghan revealed that he intentionally withdrew from public view, including deactivating his Instagram account, stating on X (formerly Twitter), "I can only sit and take so much."

"It's because there's a narrative out there that was never really even spoken on — a narrative that's not true, and I never confirmed or said anything about it," Keoghan said on the podcast. "You know, I just disappeared."

"Unfortunately, having a relationship in the public eye, we all know this from our own stories but it gets put out there, and it's like ... yeah, amplified," he said.

What happened, in Keoghan's view, was that "a girl made a video" claiming she had been with him, but later rescinded the statement in a second video. But, Keoghan said, the masses primarily only saw the first video, which fueled the widespread cheating rumors about him.

"It's a hard one, because I never want to speak on behalf of other people, and I also never want to mention other people or involve them," Keoghan explained of why he didn't address the video at the time. "And even if it is those people that I was in a relationship with, it's not my place ... and it's not their place to come forward and speak on my behalf."

As a result of the controversy, Keoghan said he received "absolutely disgusting" and "vile" comments attacking his character and even his family.

"I'm not asking people to become my fan or like me ... I'm asking for people to stop assuming, and also stop jumping on this narrative and attacking me, and dragging me down in any way you can," he said.

Keoghan shares son Brando, 2, with ex Alyson Sandro.
