Garfunkel is thrilled to return to touring after seven years and says his family fully supports his career

Art Garfunkel may be best known for his work in Simon & Garfunkel, but his most successful partnership of all just might be his decades-long marriage to wife Kathryn Luce Garfunkel.

The music legend, 84, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue that the couple’s secret to success is simple — despite the cliché, you can go to bed angry. Just don’t let it linger.

"We never get into a fight that lasts. If we go to sleep and we’ve fought, we make it up the next morning so it wouldn’t be two days in a row of turning our back on each other," he explains. "We never let a fight last. I can’t live without my wife being in accord."

Garfunkel — who is in the midst of his What a Wonderful World tour, his first full-scale tour in seven years — met Kathryn in 1985 during the filming of the movie Good to Go. They were married in September 1988 at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and are parents to sons Art Jr., 35, and Beau, 20.

Music has long been a family affair for the Garfunkels. Kathryn is a model, singer and actress who plans to star in A Little Night Music next year at Carnegie Hall. The pair's sons are also musicians; Garfunkel and Art Jr. released a collaborative album in 2024, and Beau is a student at the Berklee College of Music. Together, the whole family performed a residency at the Café Carlyle in New York in 2024.

"I’m crazy about my wife," Garfunkel says. "It all changed [when I met her]. That was the end of putting me in the center of my life. Now I’m giving to another. I’m one of two."

Expanding their family was a lifelong dream realized for the Grammy winner, who says he always knew that he wanted to be a father thanks to his own happy childhood.

"I come from a great family and I always thought that that’s a major part of life, to have a family. I experienced it in a wonderful way when I was a kid," he says.

Growing up, he’d sing his famous songs to Art Jr. and Beau only "a little bit," though "Scarborough Fair” often made the cut. He says his parenting style was rather laissez-faire, and he focused more on reinforcing the positives: "I’m not a punisher."

As he prepares to head out on tour, Garfunkel admits he’s "thrilled" to reopen that chapter of his life, and says his family is "very pleased" that he has the "health and gumption" to make it happen.

"Freud says your work life and your love life is everything. My love life is so free of trouble. I'm so happy," he says. "And my work life is very exciting now. I'm very positive. So it's a good time."
