- Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and director David Frankel reveal that Anna Wintour filmed on the sequel for one day.
- "Unfortunately, she jumped her cue, so she’s a little out of focus in the one shot that we did," Frankel says.
- Hathaway recalls, "It was so fun. She does not get enough credit for what a spectacular sense of humor she has."
*The Devil Wears Prada 2** *crew accomplished a feat more difficult than securing an unpublished *Harry Potter* manuscript: Getting *Vogue* head (and Miranda Priestly inspiration) Anna Wintour on set to film a cameo that ultimately didn't make it into the final film.
"It was so fun. She does not get enough credit for what a spectacular sense of humor she has," returning star Anne Hathaway tells ** in a joint interview with fellow star Meryl Streep, who plays Priestly, the menacing leader of the fictional *Runway* magazine inspired by *Prada* book author Lauren Weisberger's time working under Wintour.
Hathaway recalls Wintour coming to set for a day, during which she "hung out for a little bit, her wonderful daughter came with her, and we had a little fun, shot a little bit, it was great!"
Streep — who also recently learned she is genetically related to Wintour — confirms, "Yeah, it was fun" working with her relative on set that day.

Though EW previously exclusively confirmed that Wintour would not appear in the highly anticipated sequel, returning director David Frankel elaborates in another new interview why the fashion powerhouse's scene didn't end up in the final cut.
"We actually explicitly didn’t want Anna to be in the movie because it’s a parallel world. It was like, well, what is *Vogue* and who is Anna Wintour in a world where there’s a *Runway* and Miranda Priestly?" Frankel says. "It felt like it was too meta and would be distracting."
He also relays what happened with Wintour during production, revealing that she "did come to the set one day, and we did one take with her on camera" and captured footage.
"Unfortunately, she jumped her cue, so she’s a little out of focus in the one shot that we did. I didn’t want to call for take two; I didn’t know if she had the patience for that!" Frankel remembers. "Twenty years ago, we were not welcomed in that [fashion] world, and over the two decades, all the actors have become friends with Anna, and it’s great to be able to collaborate with *Vogue*."

'Devil Wears Prada 2' director explains why Adrian Grenier cameo didn't happen

Frankel's remarks come five years after he previously told EW that he had a chilling experience with Wintour following the release of the first film in 2006, which went on to gross $327 million at the global box office and earned two Oscar nominations — one for Streep and the other for costume designer Patricia Field, who didn't return for the sequel.
"I remember her daughter nudging her through the screening, like, 'They got that right!' A couple years later, I was at a tennis tournament in Miami…seated behind her, and when it was over, I made the effort to introduce myself. 'I'm David Frankel, the director of *The Devil Wears Prada*,' and [she took her] hand out of [my handshake]!" Frankel said at the time, after observing that fashion designers were also afraid to incur Wintour's wrath if their clothing appeared in the project.

Alongside Wintour's nixed cameo, EW also exclusively learned that *Euphoria* actress Sydney Sweeney filmed a three-minute cameo that would've appeared near the beginning of the film during a scene with Emily Blunt, though it was ultimately removed as a "creative decision," a source tells us.
*The Devil Wears Prada 2* is in theaters May 1.
